Ghee is rich in Vitamin K2, which is critical for skin and heart health and works with other fat-soluble Vitamins.

Ghee is composed almost entirely of saturated fat. When cooking, it can be unhealthy to heat polyunsaturated oils such as vegetable oils to high temperatures. Doing so creates peroxides and other free radicals. Ghee has a very high smoke point and doesn't burn easily during cooking. Ghee has stable saturated bonds and so is lot less likely to form the dangerous free radicals when cooking. The short chain fatty acids in Ghee's are also metabolized very readily by the body.

Seven Benefits of Aloe Vera:

Sri Sri Ayurveda’s Aloe Vera & Vitamin E Cream is a dual combination of nature’s richest ingredients – Almond and Aloe Vera – a combination which meets all the daily needs of your skin by nourishing and protecting it, making your skin healthy and vibrant.

Aloe Vera, a succulent plant that stores water in its leaves, produce two substances – the gel, which is primarily water with several other nutrients mixed in, and the sap, which is also known as aloe latex.

Aloe Vera, called as the ‘plant of immortality’ by ancient Egyptians, also known as ‘Ghritkumari’ in Hindi, has several nutrients like glycerin, sodium palmate, sodium carbonate, sodium palm kernelate, sorbitol, which are immensely beneficial for the skin and nourish it from within, making your skin replete with health.

The gel content in aloe can also be very effective in reducing acne and clearing blemishes and scars with its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, due its content of gibberellins and auxins. This helps reduce acne and contain polysaccharides that stimulate the growth of new cells, thus speeding up the healing process for acne and prevent scarring.

Benefits of Hydrating Conditioner:

Sri Sri Ayurveda’s Hydrating Conditioner is a unique composition that hydrates the hair, restores, lustre and body. Aloe Vera conditions the hair, Almond nourishes, Bringaraj detangles and Fenugreek and Coconut strengthen and prevent hair loss.

Good hair grooming is an important part of ensuring the health and longevity of hair. While there are many ways to take care of your hair, conditioning after shampooing is one of the most effective ways to achieve this. Human hair is covered by scale like cells called cuticles. These cuticles are the outermost covering of the hair, which protect it from all kinds of wear and tear. Once the cuticle is damaged, the hair itself is more prone to damage.

Damage to these cuticles makes ones hair look dull and rough. Conditioners smoothen the hair scales as opposed to shampoos - whose main purpose is to cleanse the hair shaft and hair follicle. The application of shampoos lead to the opening up of the cuticles while conditioners smoothen them up. Smoothening of the cuticles makes your hair look shiny and lustrous.

One of the main advantages to smoother hair strands is less static and fewer split ends. This makes it easier to maintain the hair. Also smoother cuticles will lead to lesser damage to it while combing your hair.

Flaxseeds come in 2 basic varieties, brown and yellow. Most types have similar nutritional characteristics and equal numbers of short chain fatty acids. Flaxseed oil is derived from Flaxseed which is one of the oldest commercial oils and also known for its rich content of Omega Fatty Acids.

In India, Flaxseed is known as Alsi. In Northern India, it is consumed traditionally by roasting, powdering and along with rice.

Here are some of the benefits of Flaxseed Oil:

High Fiber content:

One of the main benefits of Flaxseed is that it is a rich source of mucilage gum content. Mucilage is a water-soluble gel forming fiber, which is highly beneficial for the intestinal tract. Mucilage holds the food for a longer duration in the stomach and thus increases nutrient absorption from the food.

Essential Fatty Acids:

57% of the total fatty acids in Flaxseed Oil is Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA), one of three Omega Fatty Acids. These are considered to be good fats and are beneficial to the heart. Flaxseed is one of the richest (if not the richest) sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

Lower Cholesterol:

The soluble fiber content of flaxseeds traps the fat and cholesterol in the digestive system so that it is unable to be easily absorbed. This soluble fiber also traps bile, which is made from cholesterol. The bile is then removed from the body via the digestive system, signaling the body to take up more bile, thus using up the excess cholesterol.

Lignans:

Lignans are one of the major classes of phytoestrogens, which are essentially estrogen type compounds with antioxidant qualities that scavenge free radicals in the body. Flaxseed is a rich source of Lignans. It contains 75 to 800 times more lignans than other plant sources.

Sri Sri Ayurveda‘s Flaxseed Oil capsules are one of nature’s richest vegetarian sources of essential Fatty acids for humans – Omega 3, 6 & 9 Fatty Acids. It is rich in nutrients and is useful or rheumatoid arthiritis and joint pain.

Why Black Rice is good for you:

Despite being less popular than brown rice or wild rice, black rice, (known as forbidden rice) is an ancient grain that has even more impressive health benefits than most other closely related rice varieties. Not only is it the type of rice that is richest in powerful disease-fighting antioxidants, but it also contains dietary fiber, anti-inflammatory properties, and has the ability to help stop the development of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and even weight gain.

Black rice has been eaten in regions of Asia for thousands of years; in fact for centuries it was reserved for only Chinese royalty. Today this type of rice is picking up in popularity and popping up in more health food stores across the US, Australia, and Europe, as people discover the numerous health benefits that whole grain black rice has to offer.

Storehouse of anti oxidants:

An analysis of 12 different varieties of rice found that the antioxidant content of black rice was about six times higher than other varieties of rice. Black rice has also been found to rival blueberries in terms of antioxidant power. That is some fact, given that blueberries are known as one of the best antioxidants when compared with 40 other fruits and vegetables. Black rice bran has less sugar and is rich in fiber and vitamin E antioxidants.

Anti-inflammatory:

While inflammation is a healthy bodily response to foreign bacteria and viruses, sometimes inflammation can get out of control, which is most definitely not a good thing! This type of chronic inflammation is believed by many experts and medical doctors to be at the core of many of today’s common diseases, from asthma to arthritis to cancer. Researchers carried out tests on both black rice bran and brown rice bran, which showed that while brown rice bran didn’t suppress inflammation, the black rice bran did! This led the researchers to suggest that black rice may be a useful ‘therapeutic agent for the treatment and prevention of diseases associated with chronic inflammation’.

Liver health:

The liver is one of our biggest organs, responsible for converting the nutrients from our food into materials that our body can use. It also regulates hormones and plays a vital role in detoxifying our body. According to some studies, researchers were led to believe that black rice may play a role in preventing fatty liver disease, most likely due to its high antioxidant content.

Better cognition:

It’s true that certain foods rich in anthocyanin can boost your memory. There are many studies which link the main antioxidant in black rice with better memory.

Healthy heart:

It goes without saying that keeping a healthy heart is vital for overall health. Some studies seem to suggest that black rice decreases atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries. When this plaque builds up, it causes the arteries to harden and gets blocked. It’s a major risk factor for heart attack and a stroke. Researchers conclude that the antioxidant anthocyanin in black rice may play a role in reducing atherosclerosis.

Did you know – Black rice contains the highest amount of anti oxidants, protein and dietary fiber among varieties of rice.

The harmful effects are seen more in babies and young children, which is a very sensitive age, but are certainly not limited to them. With such known harmful effects, it is not a surprise that many countries in Europe have already banned fluoride!

Benefits of Kasahari Cough Syrup:

Sri Sri Ayurveda Cough Syrup is an effective herbal formulation that contains natural herbs. These herbs are effective broncho relaxants, expectorants, respiratory demulcents and anti-tussive. Sri Sri Ayurveda Cough Syrup provides quick relief from both dry cough and allergic cough accompanied with phlegm.

Coughing is a response of the human body to remove substances that will be irritating to the air passages. Coughing indicates the normal functioning of a healthy body trying to eliminate unnecessary substances like mucus, irritants, foreign bodies and microbes, but there are occasions when this can cause disruption in other normal and everyday functions like eating, breathing and constant irregular coughing may even keep you awake at nights, leading to fatigue.

The act of a cough can be broken into 3 components:

- The first act of breathing in

- A forced act of exhaling while the glottis (part of the larynx consisting of the vocal cords) is closed.

- The final release of air, which happens after the glottis opens.

Coughing can be a voluntary as well as involuntary response and can be short lived, but a persisting cough is associated with a few other ailments. It is initiated by mucous which flows down the throat. A cough that produces phlegm or other fluids may be a symptom of sinusitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia or bronchitis.

If cough is caused by the environmental factors, it will only increase with more exposure to such factors, for eg. An allergy to pollen will cause severe cough when exposed to pollen. If a person suffers from smokers cough, it can be reduced by stopping the act of smoking or exposing to smoke from other smokers, while some types of cough can be plain chronic, like asthma, bronchitis etc.

Expectorants are useful when there is a productive cough (cough with fluids). Expectorants facilitate the coughing up of mucous when repeated attempts to do so prove futile.

Supressants, as the named suggests are used to suppress the cough and are usually used to counter the painful effects of a dry cough, when each time you cough, there is a pain in the inner lining of the throat.

Protein Shampoo for strong hair

Protein is a natural, nourishing and a vital ingredient for healthy hair. If your hair has become dry, frizzy, brittle, weak, thin, dull or easily breakable then that means your hair needs a lot of nourishment consisting of proteins, amino acids and vitamins to replenish the lost nutrients and vitality.

As far as our hair is concerned, the most important protein is Keratin. Almost 88% of each strand of Human hair is made up of Keratin. Keratin is a protein naturally found in the flat cells of our hairs – it keeps them strong, elastic and healthy. As we age, the amount of keratin in our hair diminishes leaving the hair feeling dry and brittle.

Keratin gives each strand of hair its strength. Amino Acids, being the building blocks of protein are indirectly the basis of strong, healthy hair. Although there are in total 22 Amino Acids which the human body uses to build protein, the following are mnost important for healthy hair – Cystine, Cysteine, Arginine, Taurine, Tyrosine and Methionine.

Arginine – Stimulates Hair growth through the vasodilatory effect of Nitrous Oxide; strengthens hair shaft and stimulates hair follicles

Methionine - Supplies needed Sulphur to the hair for improved appearance and healthy growth

Cysteine – Improves hair strength through contribution of Sulphur

Cystine – Promotes natural hair growth and strengthens hair shafts with its disulfide bond

Tyrosine – Contributes melanin to the skin and hair; improves general health by reducing the levels of Stress Hormones

Taurine – Provides Sulphur for hair growth and appearance; prevents breakdown of hair follicles

Erratic supply of Amino Acids to the Hair follicle cells decreases the level of keratin production which in turn drastically affects the strength of hair leading to reduced hair growth, discolored hair and hair strands that easily fall off. In addition to being the building blocks of Keratin, Amino Acids also create red blood cells, which deliver Nutrients and Oxygen to hair-producing follicles.

A diet rich in Amino Acids (especially lysine and methionine) increase hair quality and growth. Some examples are cheese, seeds and nuts. It is believed that about 60 grams of protein each day goes a long way in taking care of your hair. To boost your arginine and cysteine intake, add foods such as Almonds, Brazil nuts, Oats, Sunflower Seeds and Wheat Flour to your diet.

Shampoos rich in protein content are made for this very purpose and bring back the healthy growth and glow to your hair. Protein Shampoos not only contain proteins but also vitamins and amino acids that are required for the healthy hair.

Ensure that the protein shampoo you want to use does not have harsh surfactants. There are protein shampoos that remove the naturalness of your hair. Hence take care not to use a protein shampoo that has such harsh surfactants.

Sri Sri Ayurveda’s Protein Shampoo rich in Proteins, Amoni Acids & Vitamins bring back the health and glow to your hair.

Benefits of Conditioner:

Good hair grooming is an important part of ensuring the health and longevity of hair. While there are many ways to take care of your hair, conditioning after shampooing is one of the most effective ways to achieve this.

(Pic courtesy - http://www.menshealth.co.uk/style/hair-care/q-does-my-hair-really-need-a-conditioner-364085)

Human hair is covered by scale like cells called cuticles. These cuticles are the outermost covering of the hair, which protect it from all kinds of wear and tear. Once the cuticle is damaged, the hair itself is more prone to damage.

(Pic courtesy - http://www.cfyh.co.uk/2012/03/10/black-hair-scalp-event/)

Damage to these cuticles makes ones hair look dull and rough. Conditioners smoothen the hair scales as opposed to shampoos - whose main purpose is to cleanse the hair shaft and hair follicle. The application of shampoos lead to the opening up of the cuticles while conditioners smoothen them up. Smoothening of the cuticles makes your hair look shiny and lustrous.

One of the main advantages to smoother hair strands is less static and fewer split ends. This makes it easier to maintain the hair. Also smoother cuticles will lead to lesser damage to it while combing your hair.

(Pic courtesy - http://www.thenaturalhavenbloom.com/2013/03/junk-science-opening-hairs-cuticle-for.html)

The ideal frequency to condition your hair depends on the type of your hair. If you have dry hair, then conditioning 2-3 times a week will be effective, whereas if your hair is naturally oily/greasy, then once a week should suffice.

6 tips for Acne free travelling:

Travel disrupts our normal skin functioning, what with the sudden changes in atmosphere, the varying temperature and humidity. Also, places you visit might have water with different mineral contents than those in your home city, especially if it is more as this may lead to skin irritation which may lead to skin outbreaks.

Skin care while travelling begins before the trip itself begins. It is advisable to exfoliate your face the night before you begin your trip, as this removes the dead skin cells and opens the pores. Humidifying your skin also helps immensely, as it balances the moisture content in your skin. Here are a few other tips to help you have a blemish free skin and enjoy your trip without any hassles:

(pic courtesy - http://www.murad.com/blog/travel-beauty-tips-for-acne-prone-skin/)

Less exposure to sun:

While this may be easier said than done, avoiding over exposure to the sun has multiple benefits. Apart from the well-known ill effects of over exposure to the harmful UV rays, exposure to the sun causes 2 opposite effects on acne prone skin. Initially, the sun dries out the skin. This drying effect combined with tanning give the impression of an improved complexion and reduced acne. Unfortunately, albeit this seems like progress, it later leads to thickening of the outer surface of the skin causing the pores to be clogged again, which in turn leads to an accumulation of sebum on the inner surface of the skin followed by acne. Always carry a summer hat or a cap for protection from the sun while travelling.

Face cleansers:

It is advisable to use a gel based cleanser which contains salicylic acid, citric acid and glycolic acid as this helps in reducing the dead skin cells that clog the pores and lead to pimple outbreaks.

Less acidic food:

While travelling, it is but obvious that you may want to indulge yourself in the local culinary offerings. Although, this is part of the experience, it is highly advisable to keep your eye on what you consume. It is best to avoid very spicy foods, ice creams, sodas and other beverages. Refined carbs deep fried foods are especially the worst for summer acne.

Hydration:

Keep yourself hydrated at all times. This includes drinking more water in a day during summers than your usual intake and also include other fluids, (fruit and vegetable juices) which provide both nutrients as well as much needed electrolytes to the body. Water, being a great detoxifier, leads to a healthier, clearer skin.

Avoid oily hair:

If your hair is oily, chances are your face gets oily as well. In this scenario, regularly washing your hair with a mild shampoo and conditioner helps. If you have long hair, it helps to keep them away from your face.

Wipes:

Keep this your purse or beach bag, especially if you’re traveling to somewhere hot and humid where you’ll be sweating a lot. Having these wet wipes handy keeps the skin clear by removing dirt, bacteria and pore clogging oil. These wipes are excellent for on-the-go, and won’t agitate sensitive skin.

5 tips to overcome itchiness caused by dandruff:

An accumulation of dead skin cells on the scalp leads to Dandruff.  The dead skin cells look like white flakes obstructing the flow of air to the scalp and hair and thus makes them weak. Another major issue faced by those who develop dandruff is the accumulation of these dead skin cells on the shoulders, chest or the attire that you wear. This happens either naturally by the force of wind or when you comb your hair.

Dandruff also leads to an itchy scalp. This can be embarrassing in public, and may cause a lot of discomfort and even hair loss. Some of the most common factors are over exposure to hair styling products, frequent exposure to heat (sun) especially during summers, people with inherent dry skin, exposure to dust, excessive sweating, stress, poor hair care, sebaceous cysts, fungus and viral infections and a poor diet.

There are many ways you can treat an itchy scalp without spending a lot of money.

Shikakai
:

Shikakai is a very effective and tested alternative for shampoos. It has been used since a very long time as a shampoo, and its natural ingredients have a far less detrimental effect on the hair as compared to shampoos while cleaning the hair while also preventing dandruff.

Hair Oil:

If dandruff is caused because of dryness of hair, the best remedy is regular application of oils like that obtained from coconut to the hair. Application of lukewarm oils (do not apply hot oil!) helps in deep penetration of the oil and more effective absorption. Massaging a mix of Almond and Sesame Oil on your scalp also helps in the prevention of dandruff.

Blood Impurities:

According to Ayurveda, most of the skin diseases are related to either some blood impurities or Dosha imbalance in blood. If this is the cause then medicine and treatments are suggested to treat impurity. Kindly consult your physician for a suitable solution.

Wholesome Diet:

Consumption of excessively spicy foods will have a detrimental effect on the long term health of the hair. Having a wholesome diet not only keeps the body healthy, but also improves the chances of avoiding dandruff.

Fenugreek:

A ground mixture of Fenugreek with water acts as a natural conditioner and also improves the sheen of the hair.

While dandruff is not a major health-threatening factor, neglecting it might result in skin disorders in the long term. Hence it is advisable to treat it at the earliest.

5 reasons why sunscreen is important:

Summers are times we tend to spend more time outdoors and whether it’s spending a day at the beach or running errands, protection from the Sun is essential. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 (or higher) goes a long way in protecting your skin. Here are a few reasons to use sunscreen to protect your skin.

Not all sunscreens are made alike – some provide a physical barrier (minerals) while others provide a chemical barrier that absorbs ultraviolet rays which is retained within the chemical layer making it potentially harmful. SPF stands for "sun protection factor" and indicates the length of time you can stay in the sun; you calculate the SPF by the number of minutes you can stay in the sun without burning normally. (For example, if your skin turns red after 10 minutes in the sun, a sunscreen with SPF of 15 should allow you to spend 150 minutes in the sun.)

Prevents premature aging:

Sunscreen protects your skin from showing early signs of aging, like wrinkles and face lines. According to studies, people who regularly use sunscreen have lesser chances of developing premature signs of aging than those with irregular or no sunscreen use.

Protects from harmful UV rays:

This is one of the most widely accepted and important roles of a sunscreen. The ever thinning Ozone layer has made sunscreen a must have not only in summers, but throughout the year, especially if you’re in a tropical climate. Although it is believed that exposure to the sun imparts Vitamin D, over exposure is never a good idea. Sunscreen with a good SPF (Sun Protection Factor) blocks the harmful UV rays and thus prevents skin disorders.

Lowers risks of Skin cancer:

One very important benefit of sunscreen is that it shields your skin from skin cancer risks, especially, melanoma, one of the worst types of skin cancers, which can be life threatening for women.

Improves Skin health:

The essential skin proteins, such as collagen, keratin, and elastin are protected by sunscreen. These proteins are required for keeping the skin smooth and healthy.

Tanning:

Getting a tan prematurely ages our skin. It doesn’t matter whether the tan is natural or artificial since they all emit UV rays that accelerate ageing of the skin. A broad spectrum sunscreen helps avoid the harmful effects of tanning.

5 ways how cream is beneficial for your skin:

The benefits of Milk baths have been known to man (and women!) for centuries —millenia, even — and for good reason, as it not only reinvigorates and hydrates the  high content of calcium, but it is a treasure of many other vital nutrients that make it a wonderful beauty aid. Here are some simple face packs that will help you get soft and glowing skin.

No more dry skin:

Milk cream is highly beneficial for dry and parched skin as it quickly provides much needed hydration for the dull and lackluster skin. Milk cream contains water, fat and proteins, which replenish the moisturizing factors of the to overcome dry skin.

Heals cracked heels:

Milk helps in repairing the cracked heels by exfoliating the dead skin and moisturizing the dry skin of your heel. Application of cream packs before retiring to bed, followed by gentle exfoliation with pumice stone will restore smooth skin in a few weeks.

(pic courtesy - http://tipsandbeauty.com/how-to-use-bleach-cream-on-face-benefits-of-bleaching/)

Cools sunburns:

If you’ve got a sunburn for any reason, milk cream helps you with that as well. Keep a soft cloth soaked in a bowl of fresh milk in the fridge and apply this on the area affected by the sunburn (like a cold compress). Milk soothes sunburn with the help of anti-inflammatory, moisturising and skin-repairing properties. It is advisable to avoid using whole fat milk because of its fat content.

Effective exfoliate:

Milk has a definitive property flushing out oil soluble impurities as it contains the fat soluble enzyme lipase. It also is highly efficient in removing dead skin cells with its lactic acid content, as a result of which skin becomes smoother and brighter.

Prevent wrinkles:

We get exposed to a lot of pollutants on a daily basis, as also the various chemicals in other products, all of which take a toll on the skin. In addition to premature wrinkling caused by sun exposure, free radicals in pollution can reduce the skin’s natural levels of vitamin E, making it more susceptible to wrinkles. Milk face cream containing vitamin E, with its anti-oxidant properties, can help protect against early onset of wrinkles. Also, cream containing the alpha-Tocopherol form of vitamin E may reduce the depth of existing wrinkles

7 Benefits of Exfoliation:

The human body is continuously producing new cells to replace those that naturally die off. As we age, this rate of cellular turnover slows down, especially those of the skin cells. The slower turnover and excessive dead skin cells on the surface is one of the causes for dull and lackluster skin.  Not only this, dead skin cells also clog your pores and create a blockage, leading to ineffectiveness of any application on the skin.

Just knowing ‘why’ to exfoliate is the first step to critical facial skin care. It is equally, if not more important to know ‘how’ to take care of the skin as well. In order to maintain healthy, youthful, glowing skin we do need to both remove old, dead skin cells and encourage proper cellular turn over. Exfoliating both removes the old dead skin cells and speeds up cell renewal enabling new healthy skin cells to grow. Exfoliation has many benefits, a few of which are highlighted below:

Decongests clogged Pores:

Clogged pores result in blackheads, small whiteheads, and clogged bumps on the surface of the skin. Gently removing the excess dry cells by exfoliation helps releasing the oils trapped underneath the surface and decongest the pores.

Reduces marks and scars post breakout:

For many, the main contention is the marks and scars that are left behind after an acne breakout. Regular exfoliation helps to fade away these marks and scars by removing the damaged cells from the surface and giving way to the new and healthier skin cells sans scars, leading to a well toned and smooth skin.

Smooth Skin:

Regular exfoliation leads to much smoother skin than when you don’t exfoliate. When the surface of the skin is free from the dead skin cells, the skin appears smooth and even.

Helps reduce Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation happens due to a variety of factors like pregnancy, genetics, hormonal changes or at a particular age. Exfoliation helps by separating the pigmented cells, thus leading them to fade.

Dry Skin:

If you have dry skin, exfoliation is very important to remove the buildup of dry skin cells from the surface. The moisturizers that we normally apply on the skin to overcome dryness without exfoliating only helps in blocking the skin pores and covering the dead skin cells. Application of moisturizers post exfoliation is much more effective on the fresh skin cells.

Less wrinkles:

Our skin is a bid to take care of itself naturally exfoliates, but this process slows down as we age, resulting in an accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface. Regular exfoliation sends a signal to the skin to act young again by removing these dead skin cells.

Reduces Blemishes:

For those with acne – who work towards drier skin - exfoliation becomes very important because dry skin leads to an accumulation of dead cells as well, which may lead to further breakout. Regular exfoliation efficiently removes these dead cells and prevents a reoccurrence of breakout.

You may be cleansing, moisturizing or even applying dollops of that sunscreen, but if you aren’t exfoliating, your skin is not as healthy as it can be. Our Exfoliating Face Scrub removes dirt, grime and blackheads while gently cleaning the skin. Its ingredients remove the top layer of dead skin bringing your underlying fresh layer of skin cells to the fore and thus making your skin look revitalized.

Benefits of Sandalwood Soap:

Sandalwood trees belong to the genus Santalum. They are typically heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and unlike many other aromatic woods, retain their fragrance for decades. The oil from is Sandalwood is extracted from the woods and is widely used in perfumes, soaps etc. Both the wood and the oil produce a distinctive fragrance that has been highly valued for centuries. As a result of this, these slow-growing trees have suffered over-harvesting in the past century. The two most widely found species of Sandalwood – Santalum album and Santalum spicatum are majorly found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, Indonesia, Hawaii and other pacific islands.

Sandalwood has some very effective properties which make it an ideal choice to include in your skin care, some of which are given below:

Clean and healthy skin:

Sandalwood helps in healing skin ailments like acne by resisting germs and bacteria. It is very helpful for those with oily skin as it removes the excess oil while retaining the necessary moisture.

Anti-aging:

The toning effect of sandalwood helps in shrinking the pores of the skin and lead to an even formation and resulting in delayed signs of aging. It tightens the skin tissues and gives the skin a youthful look.

Supple and soft skin:

The skin being the largest organ of the body, protectS all that is underneath it in part by blocking harmful bacteria from entering. Protecting it from becoming too dry is important, not just for appearance, but also for health. When skin gets dry to the point of cracking, those cracks in the surface of the skin offer an opportunity for germs and bacteria to enter the body. A good quality sandalwood soap, made with true Sandalwood oil, cleanses without drying, its own oils remaining to protect the skin, helping to keep it soft and supple.

Antiseptic properties:

As per the Ayurvedic system of medicine, sandalwood has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Due to which it is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a broad range of skin disorders, ranging from mild abrasions to acne to dermatitis.

Skin Rejuvenation at night

Your body, after a long days toil needs some much deserved rest. But it is while you are at rest that the body sets right all that needs to be done to within your system. While asleep, the body and skin recuperates, repairs itself and absorbs your skin care much more effectively. If you don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, your skin and face start looking puffy, dull and lifeless, undoing all the good work your skin care has done during the day.

A routine sleeping pattern that isn’t too harsh on the body and provides sufficient rest is the best way to make a noticeable difference to your skin, as your body can prepare itself for the process that happens when we sleep. It is advisable to hit the bed latest by 11pm as this allows the skin optimum time to repair overnight, with the majority of these functions taking place between midnight and 4am.

(pic courtesy - http://www.vivawoman.net/2010/07/5-things-to-know-about-your-skin-at-night/)

During the hours that you sleep, your skin cells get into regeneration mode, replacing damaged or dead cells with new ones. All that damage that the sun and pollutants wreaked on your skin during the day is undone with a natural exfoliation during which dead skin cells are replaced with new ones. Interrupted sleep also interrupts this very important process leaving dead cells on the skin surface and further leading to blocked pores and scars.

Another major factor is that during the night time when at rest, cortisol (stress hormone) production is reduced. Cortisol can contribute to many skin issues, from thinning skin to discolouration, so taking the time to relax and clear your mind before you go to bed can really help stop stress related skin complaints. As the night progresses, and the sleep becomes deeper the blood flow also becomes more consistent throughout the body. This benefits the skin greatly and gives the much needed colour to the skin, which glows after a good night’s rest.

Night time is perfect to use your more intensive skin care products, like those which refresh and rejuvenate and hydrate your skin. This is because the effect of application of any such products during the day can be disrupted by external factors like the sun, wind and rain. When applied at night, these very ingredients have a sustained amount of time to impart their benefits. Making these part of your night time ritual means you wake up the next day with soft, smooth and glowing skin.

Protein Shampoo for strong hair:

Muscle Cramps during summer:

Muscle cramps are the sudden and involuntary contraction of muscles in your body. The most common occurrence is that of muscles in the leg (the calf and the hamstring) although it is not limited to just this place.

It is a common belief that muscle cramps and stitches occur more frequently during winters or even the monsoons, mostly with the drop in temperatures that occur in these seasons. The truth couldn’t be farther from this belief.

If anything, during winters and monsoons, when temperatures are likely lesser, it is advisable to increase time spent in stretching and loosening your body as it tends to be stiffer. During summers, what with the extra heat and humidity, our body is already more supple. Leg cramps are far more prone to happen during the summers as the heat leads to loss of water and fluids from the body due to excess sweating.

The first thing to do when afflicted by a muscle cramp is to stretch the said muscle. Proper care must be taken to not stretch it too much, which may lead to a muscle tear. For eg., in case of a cramp in your calf muscle (muscle running from the back of the knee to the ankle) it is advisable to stretch the leg and NOT fold your leg at the knee (as this may lead to severe cramping of the muscle). A few other methods of preventing and relieving a muscle cramps are given below:

Warm compress:

A tried and tested method to overcome the muscle pain caused due to cramps is a warm compress. A warm compress imparts heat to the muscles which leads to improved blood circulation and makes muscles more supple. The application of heat can be done in a variety of ways, by placing a heating pad on the affected area, gently running hot water or even a hot shower might do the trick.

Ice packs:

You may also treat the area affected by a muscle cramp using ice as it acts as an efficient pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory. Placing an ice bath on the area for around 10 minutes or till the area turns red (indicating the return of blood cells to the cramped area) is a very effective method. An alternate treatment with ice and hot water has proved to be very effective for professional athletes.

While it is advisable to increase the intake of water during summers, the downside of this is the loss of electrolytes getting flushed out with the excess water intake. To overcome this loss, adding electrolytes to your drink or consuming electrolyte capsules helps in retaining those essential Sodium and Potassium ions.

Hair care during summers:

You might have good hair days throughout the year, but come summer and taming the hair becomes one monstrous activity! Limp and lifeless, that bounce which made you look sassy suddenly deserts you at the onset of summer. There are reasons manifold for this – if your city is one which is humid, your hair gets weighed down. Sweat and dust also contribute to hair problems like dandruff, split ends, frizziness, split ends and increased hair fall.

Summers are not too kind on your scalp as well, causing dryness and sunburn. It is commonly believed that hair protects the scalp but that is not the case. Dry scalp during summers will make you apply lots of conditioner, which must be avoided. Although some suggest washing your hair everyday, it is not advisable for the long term health of hair. Alternatively, going for long periods without washing your hair is also a strict no-no, since this will lead to accumulation of all the sweat and grime and you’ll quickly notice not many people want to come close to you.

Less exposure:

The method of prevention is best when it comes to allergies. Reducing exposure to the things that may kickstart the allergy is very important. Towards this, stay indoors on dry, windy days and venturing out after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air. Avoid mowing the lawn and other gardening chores that may expose you to pollen and other allergens.

Regular bath:

Not wearing the same clothes repeatedly and taking multiple showers during the day helps rinse off any possible accumulation of pollen from the body.

Protection:

If you are one of those who has to involve in chores, whether outdoors or indoors, it is better to have some protection like a face mask while performing the chores.

Be informed:

Although the incidents aren’t much it helps to be forewarned about possible pollen forecasts and take the necessary precautions. Daily updates are available on the Internet. If there is particularly high pollen forecast during a day, it is better to take preventive medication. It is always a good idea to consult a local physician regarding the suitable medication and not to self medicate.
